DGNB Gold Certification for the OPUS Krefeld Project

The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) presented Düsseldorf-based project developer die developer with the DGNB Gold Certificate for the OPUS Krefeld project at the EXPO Real real estate trade fair in Munich.

In 2023, die developer Projektentwicklung GmbH (die developer) realized a forward-looking office building in a central location at Willy-Brandt-Platz in Krefeld, covering more than 13,000 m² of building area and offering over 400 modern workspaces. The project stands out for its bright, open, and human-centered working environment, complemented by a spacious entrance area with integrated communication zones and an intuitive guidance system. A particular highlight is the lushly landscaped inner courtyard, which serves both as a design feature and as a retreat for relaxation and exchange for employees and visitors alike.

From the very beginning, a central goal in the development of OPUS was to take a holistic approach to sustainability. As a result, an almost completely unsealed “park” area was created, featuring climate-resilient trees of various sizes and canopy forms, providing positive climatic effects and enhancing the urban environment. Inside, OPUS Krefeld impresses with a consistent “low-tech” design approach and the use of sustainable materials, allowing the building to operate without complex ventilation systems and with reduced cooling capacity — promoting resource efficiency and durability.

The DGNB Gold Certification underscores this holistic approach in an impressive way. To achieve this level, buildings must meet the highest standards across several evaluation categories, including ecological quality (e.g., energy and resource efficiency), economic quality, socio-cultural and functional quality, technical quality, as well as process and site quality.

Stefan H. Mühling, Managing Director of die developer Projektentwicklung, said:
“This award is a strong signal for us, because sustainability and economic efficiency are not mutually exclusive — they depend on one another. OPUS Krefeld demonstrates what responsible project development can look like today, with a focus on people, the environment, and the future. Our sincere thanks go to the City of Krefeld, Lindner Architekten, our construction partner Dreßler Bau GmbH, all planning and specialist partners, and our entire team, who realized this project with passion, expertise, and foresight.”
